What to Do After a Hailstorm (First 72 Hours)
These steps follow the Texas Department of Insurance's guidance on hail and windstorm damage and recovering after a storm.
- Stay safe. Keep off the roof and away from downed lines.
- Take photos and video of the damage, inside and outside, and don't throw damaged items away until your insurer says you can.
- Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can. You don't need to wait for a roofer first.
- Make only temporary repairs to prevent more damage, such as emergency tarping over an active leak, and keep every receipt.
- Don't make permanent repairs before the insurance adjuster has seen the damage.
- Book a documented inspection before you sign anything with a contractor.
Who Should Inspect Your Roof After Hail?
Choose a local, established roofing contractor with a real street address, one who gives you dated photos and a written scope before you sign anything. Be wary of anyone who offers to waive or cover your deductible (that's illegal in Texas) or who says they'll "handle your claim." Documentation for Your Insurance Carrier (What We Do and Don't Do)
Frame documents the damage with photos and prepares a written roofing scope for your carrier to review. We can meet your carrier's adjuster on site when you request it. Coverage decisions stay between you and your insurer. We document; your carrier decides.
Texas law (Insurance Code §4102.163) doesn't allow a roofer that does or may do the work to act as an adjuster on your claim, so we don't. Your insurer may also ask for proof that you paid your deductible. The Texas Department of Insurance roof guide suggests asking your agent whether you have replacement cost or actual cash value coverage, and whether your wind and hail deductible is different from your other deductibles. Repair or Replace After Hail?
Not every hailstorm means a new roof. The answer depends on:
- How widespread the impacts are. A few damaged shingles on one slope can often be repaired.
- The roof's age and condition before the storm.
- The decking. Soft or damaged decking changes the scope.
- Matching. If your shingle line is discontinued, a clean repair may not be possible.
